Australian Open 2016

The first Major of 2016 starts on Monday January 18, 2016 with the qualifying. Are you ready for this? Some of the top women players starting the tournament with injuries that may lead to their exiting early. Serena Williams left knee, Maria Sharapova left forearm, Simona Halep left Achilles heel injury. Others like Lucie Safarova with a chronic virorous already withdrawing. Stay tuned for more updates.

In the first round my two favorite players were defeated, Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep. Rafa played against Fernando Verdasco and went five sets. It was a back and forth match however Verdasco was pounding  the ball in the last two sets with serves in the mid 130s mph and returning vicious lefty forehand winners and playing one of the best matches of his life.

What’s wrong with Novak Djokovic’s game???

So do you Know what's wrong?

Well as far as I can see there is nothing significantly wrong with his game that I have seen lately. He is serving better than ever and as far as return of serve, one of the top three. At times it's almost annoying to see him attempt to retrieve a ball that you are sure he can not make and then he makes it into the other court for a point. He slides on a hard court as if it were clay and stretches into unbelieveable positions to hit the ball back to turn defense into offense. What do you have to do to beat this guy? I don't know and neither do most of the other ATP players. He does have bad days like everyone else but you better be playing at the top of your game even then.

Congratulations to Novak Djokovic winning the ATP World Tour Finals for three straight years and ending the year as number one again!

Beijing is having some terrific matches

Rafael Nadal although winning today over German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk 6-3,6-4 showed subtle signs of his right wrist injury. During his match with Gojowczyk he hit many more backhand slices than he usually does. That indicates to me that he is saving his wrist for latter in the tournament when he will need it most. He said that so far he is not one hundred percent and that showed by how he played his strokes.
