Simona Halep Rogers Cup Victory

Simona Halep defeated the very strong hitter Madison Keys in Montreal with some difficulty  7-6 (7/2), 6-3. Fortunately  Simona Halep was able to move Keys around enough to make her have errors forced and mostly unforced. It could have been a lot different but Keys hit so many into the net and out of bounds, certainly not looking her best. In the second set Halep brought up her game to claim the victory. So for Simona Halep my favorite female player best of luck for a great year and maybe a Major title.

The 2016 Roland Garros Men’s Champion

The title Novak Djokovic has been striving for finally has his name as champion. The major title at Roland Garros to complete his grand slam finally achieved and a great burden off Novak's mind. He has been notably edgy for a couple of months leading up to this event and not his usual controlled self.

The tournament at the Balboa Tennis Club in San Diego California began after a rain delay from drizzle at about 10:30 AM on Monday May 30th. The tournament director   Colleen Clery Ferrell was busy getting things organized and the courts ready for the players but always takes time to give you a big smile and a warm welcome. Always a fun event I had my usual results as an amateur against the pros always hoping to do better ;-). Here I am with Colleen the Director. The New Queen of Clay and Roland Garros Champion!!!

In a hard fought and very high level of skill exhibited by both players Garbine Muguruza defeated Serena Williams in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. The balls were flying hard and fast and Garbine brought up her tournament average topspin ground stroke from 73 mph to 76 mph in the championship match. A very aggressive Muguruza kept Williams farther back from the base line than usual. Massive shots by both players kept the audience electrified! Garbine Muguruza, 22 years old wins her first major title in Paris with the Roland Garros title. Will she carry on for Spain as Rafael Nadal has for years only time will tell.  A big congratulations to Garbine Muguruza now a Grand Slam champion!

Adios Lleyton Hewitt

Lleyton Hewitt a two time Major champion put up his usual tremendous effort in the Australian Open Major Tournament but lost to the Spaniard David Ferrer in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.  There were lots of deuces with Ferrer serving and fabulous shots by both players but Ferrer managed grind out the win in his usual manor.

In the post match interview Ferrer was very gracious and remarked that Hewitt was his Idol. He told the story of how he got Lleyton to sign a tee shirt that he keeps in his home tennis museum and that it is the only tee shirt that he has in his museum.

Hewitt was given a fond farewell from the announcer, players such as Novak and Rafa and of course his fans. He enjoyed it in the company of his wife and three children.
